Smart Home Reviews
Research-based reviews of real, currently available products — with the trade-offs stated as plainly as the benefits.

How our reviews work
We call these research-based reviews because that is what they are. Each one is built from manufacturer product pages, official specification sheets, published compatibility lists and verified owner reports.
We do not claim hands-on testing on any page where we have not handled the product, and we do not publish star ratings, invented prices or measured results we cannot substantiate. Where a product has a real limitation, it is in the review — including on products we earn a commission from.
If you have used one of these products and think we have something wrong, tell us. Corrections are the most useful email we get.
Aqara Smart Lock U100
A full-replacement deadbolt with more entry methods than most locks twice its complexity — provided you are willing to own an Aqara hub.
SwitchBot Lock Pro
It clamps over your existing deadbolt, keeps your keys, and comes off without a trace. The trade-offs are real but predictable.
Ring Battery Doorbell Pro
The taller frame shows the package on the step instead of the sidewalk. The subscription shows up on your statement every month.
Philips Hue White and Color Ambiance Starter Kit
More expensive than the competition, and still the lighting system most people should buy — because the Bridge is what makes it dependable.
ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium
The included remote sensor is the real feature. The voice assistant and air quality monitoring are extras you may or may not use.
Amazon Echo Dot (5th Gen)
It is a speaker, a timer and a Matter controller in one small puck. It is also the least expensive way to find out whether you want voice control at all.
Roborock Q7 Max+
A self-emptying robot vacuum that gets the fundamentals right, with a mop that flatters rather than scrubs.
iRobot Roomba j7+
The j7+ costs more than its cleaning performance alone justifies. The front camera is what you are buying, and for some homes it is worth it.
Ring Indoor Cam (2nd Gen)
The hardware is inexpensive and capable. What you get out of it depends almost entirely on whether you pay for a Ring plan.
Wyze Cam v4
A very cheap camera with a genuinely useful local-storage option. The trade-offs are in the app and the subscription, not the hardware.
Aqara Smart Lock U200
The U200 fits over your existing deadbolt instead of replacing it, which solves the biggest problem with smart locks. Here is what that trade buys and costs.
