The U100 is Aqara's flagship residential deadbolt, and it is aimed squarely at people who want the full feature list: fingerprint, keypad, app control, Apple Home Key and a physical key as a fallback.

That is a lot to fit into one lock, and the U100 mostly succeeds. The catch is not the lock. It is the ecosystem around it.

What it is

A full-replacement deadbolt. You remove your existing deadbolt and install the U100 in its place, which means your door's backset, cross bore and thickness all need to match the lock's specification.

Entry methods include a fingerprint reader on the exterior escutcheon, a keypad, the Aqara app, Apple Home Key through Wallet, and a concealed mechanical key. It runs on a rechargeable battery pack rather than disposables, and includes a USB-C port for emergency power if the battery is completely flat.

It communicates over Zigbee 3.0. That is the detail that shapes everything else about owning it.

What works well

  • The entry method lineup is genuinely complete. Fingerprint for speed, keypad for guests, Home Key for iPhone users, and a real key for the day the battery dies. Very few locks cover all four.
  • Apple Home Key is the standout. Tapping a phone or Apple Watch works even when the phone battery is critically low, which makes it more reliable than app-based unlocking in the situations where you actually need it.
  • Rechargeable battery. Not buying disposables every few months is a real long-term saving and one less thing to keep in a drawer.
  • Build quality reads as premium. The escutcheon is substantial and the mechanism feels like hardware rather than a gadget.
  • Auto-lock and away mode cover the two automations most people actually want from a smart lock.

Trade-offs and limitations

  • Remote access requires an Aqara hub. The lock is Zigbee, not Wi-Fi. Without a hub you lose app control from outside the house, automations, and integration with Apple Home, Alexa and Google. Budget for the hub — or confirm you already own a compatible one.
  • Matter support needs verification. Aqara has been rolling Matter support out through its hubs via firmware, and the details depend on the hub model and current release. Check Aqara's documentation for your specific hub before assuming Matter is available.
  • Installation is not trivial for everyone. It is a screwdriver job on a standard US door, but a non-standard backset, a thick door or a binding frame turns it into a project.
  • Not the right lock for a rental. Replacing the deadbolt means the landlord's keys no longer work, and you will have to reinstall the original hardware when you leave.
  • Exterior exposure. If your door faces direct rain or salt air, check the manufacturer's environmental rating rather than assuming it is fine.

Who it is for

Homeowners replacing a deadbolt on a standard door, particularly iPhone households where Home Key is genuinely useful. It also suits anyone who wants the widest range of entry methods and does not mind adding an Aqara hub.

It is not the right pick if you rent, if you already have a strong investment in a different hub ecosystem, or if you want the simplest possible setup with no extra hardware.

Bottom line

The U100 is one of the more complete residential smart locks available, and its feature list holds up against the marketing. The honest caveat is that the total purchase is the lock plus a hub plus an afternoon of installation — and if you have not priced the hub in, the value proposition changes.

If you are replacing a deadbolt and want Home Key, buy it. If you rent, look at a retrofit lock instead.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Aqara U100 work without a hub?

You can unlock it locally with the fingerprint reader, keypad or mechanical key. Remote access, automations and Apple Home integration require a compatible Aqara hub, because the lock communicates over Zigbee.

Does the U100 support Matter?

Aqara has been adding Matter support through its hubs via firmware updates. Whether it applies to your setup depends on the hub model and firmware version, so check Aqara's current documentation before buying.

Can I install the U100 myself?

Yes, if your door uses a standard US backset and cross bore and you are comfortable with a screwdriver. Measure first: backset, bore diameter and door thickness. A non-standard door is the usual reason installations go wrong.

Is the U100 good for a rental apartment?

No. It replaces the deadbolt, which means the existing keys stop working and you must reinstall the original hardware when you move out. A retrofit lock is the renter-friendly alternative.
